About the Cinecyclopedia

What the heck is a Cinecyclopedia?
This site is intended to be a collaborative database of information and opinions on film. I aim for a resource that bridges the Internet Movie Database, Wikipedia, and personal webpages with film reviews.

Please contribute often! For instance, you could review a movie you've seen. Your review could be highly opinionated (and is encouraged to be). You could link to articles about the actors involved, the studios, and so forth. These would be highly factual (and really should be).

You need to register to contribute to this site. This is so your work is protected under your (user)name, and also to keep things sane. I promise on a stack of Bibles or your holy book of choice that I will never ever give your email to a third party or spam you; I won't even look at your email address unless I need to contact you. In fact, I am not even entirely sure how to look at your email address.

I think the possibilities are endless, which is both really exciting and a tiny bit overwhelming. So, I think a good place to start might be to write some reviews of movies you've seen, then maybe write informative entries. For example, you could review Citizen Kane, then write a biographical entry on Orson Welles.

Or you could review a book or two about the movies. You get the idea! Whatever you want! The beauty of a collaborative effort is that it takes its shape as time progresses. For now, I envision this as aimed towards an audience of educated laypeople. So write accordingly. Of course, you don't have to; it's merely a suggestion.

Guidelines:

At this time, my only real rules would be:

Please categorize content as either Category-Facts or Category-Opinion as applicable. A review or filmic essay (for example, a piece on genre theory) would be Opinion. Anything that could legitimately placed on Wikipedia is (for our purposes) a Fact.

Respect other people's writing, especially opinion pieces. You should not delete or edit opinion pieces or essays. Feel free to edit incorrect information categorized as facts, but don't delete it unless it is obvious spam, in which case, an email to the AdMin is much appreciated.

Please keep entries defendably on-topic. An entry about film projectors or directors or individual films is on topic. An entry about your mom is not, unless she's Diane Keaton or something. For now, speculation about future projects is not on topic.

Please make some vague attempt to hold to basic spelling & grammar rules. I'm an English teacher. I know we're not all spelling aces, but oh please, hitting that little button in your word processor is oh-so-easy!

Also, if possible, source original research when writing reviews or essays. Some things are common knowledge (e.g., such and such film was released in such and such year; such-and-such film was directed by so-and-so). Some things are not (e.g.,, Director Y says, "Actor G sucked to work with!"). Follow your instinct, or consult MLA. Please don't make things up. We all know Chuck Norris did not direct Citizen Kane.

Please don't write anything that would get anybody sued. I'm assuming you are all adults. When you register for this website, you are taking responsibility for your words. I can't take responsibility for them. So be responsible.

Protocol for multiple movie reviews: If someone has already written a review for a movie you want to review, fret not! Create a page with the movie title and your username: for example, EverythingIsIlluminatedMirandoM. Then add a link to your review to the original page.

I am excited, because I think this will be a fun, collaborative resource on film. I hope you are excited, too.

Thanks,
AdMin (aka MirandoM)

NEWS (this section will contain new and pertinent information, aka, NEWS)
Today (9/18) I added the category Users (spaced here so this page doesn't become part of that category. Please point your user page to that page if you want to be part of it. I mean, why wouldn't you?
